Academic Building
Location: Dudley, MA
Client: Nichols College
Architect: Juster Pope Frazier
Madigan was engaged to construct the largest academic building project that the College had undertaken to date for this new Academic Building. An undeveloped and very steep parcel of land near the main entrance of the campus provided a challenging landscape. Massive concrete foundation walls were utilized to retain the earth on this hilly site. The team was challenged with creating a state-of-the-art facility which, on the exterior, complimented the traditional New England brick facades of the adjacent campus buildings yet was to be the manifestation of the College’s vision as the centerpiece of the campus. Madigan executed the assignment despite the several challenges of the project.
The College required that the building be LEED Gold Certified (the first building on the campus to have LEED Certification), and additional time was built into the schedule to accommodate the strict requirements for the certification process. The construction emphasized the use of locally sourced and recycled materials, and incorporated daylighting strategies and efficient use of water.
