Location: Worcester, MA
Client:
Becker College
Architect: William J. Masiello, AIA, Architect

This project, located at Becker College’s Worcester campus, was constructed on an extremely tight and challenging site. Madigan was retained to bring the existing facility up to modern life safety and structural code standards, while retaining the historic character of the building. A new connector addition between the main structure and the carriage house brought a modern flair to the stately structure.  Soon after the project commenced, unsuitable soil conditions were discovered which required soil restraint systems to be designed and implemented. Despite the setback, the project was completed on time, ready for the spring academic semester.

Two story glass walls were constructed overlooking the formal gardens at the rear of the mansion. The main foyer and formal living spaces were converted to functional areas for gathering, interacting and collaborative learning. Structural and seismic reinforcement work was performed at all levels and areas of the building. The finished product is an exciting blend of old and new, classic and modern, and has been hailed by College officials as the “gemstone of the campus.”
