This project, started in the spring of 2020, involved the renovation of an existing wing of Saint John’s Conal Hall and the creation of a new entry vestibule dedicated to the middle school.  The scope included significant demolition work, removing an existing stairwell, infilling a floor structure in its place, and converting the space into a bathroom, building out a new administration lobby/office area, installing an ADA-compliant wheelchair lift, renovating eight classrooms, building a new glass and curtainwall entry vestibule, and related sitework.

The primary challenge on this job was coordinating schedule and being flexible, as this project had a very detailed and strict schedule for what work was allowed in the building given that the high school was required to remain open for classes at the start of the project.  This plan and schedule had to be completely changed due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which included all work on the project being suspended for 6 weeks shortly after start due to Massachusetts shutdown regulations.  Despite this shutdown, we were able to work with the School and our subcontractor teams to coordinate work in such a way that the Brother Robert Treanor, C.F.X. Middle School was able to open on time, for the start of the fall 2020 School Year.

Highlights

  • Renovation of approximately 28,000 sf of existing classroom space to create new bathrooms, classrooms, and administrative space.

  • Project was performed while school was in operation and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Despite the project being shut down for 6 weeks due to COVID-19, the Middle School still opened in time for the start of the 2020-2021 school year.
